Cupping

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient Oriental Medicine technique used for more than just pain relief and sore muscles. Recently, cupping gained recognition after the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Athletes utilized cupping to alleviate discomfort and stiffness from excessive physical exertion. The athletes were using this therapy can help to relieve muscle tension and promote circulation and blood flow. Cupping works by applying small glass suction cups to help pull the muscles and tissues up, releasing built-up lactic acid and reducing pain. The treated area may feel tight as the cups are applied, but patients report the sensation as enjoyable and relaxing. There are many benefits to cupping: reducing pain and increasing range of motion.

In addition, cupping has been used for years to aid in detoxification, support the immune system and open up the lungs in cases of respiratory restraint.

After cupping, some people will see circles on their back ranging from light pink to a darker purple, looking similar to that of a bruise. These are entirely normal and expected. The cup marks will dissipate within a couple of days and are not painful. After a cupping treatment, a patient should feel less pain and be more relaxed.

Treatments are usually scheduled in 40-minute blocks; enough time is given to go over health concerns or any questions you may have.
